Lines, Squirrels, Kittens & Crosses

Gila Bend, AZ:  As I drove away from the motel this morning I discovered why half the town had no electricity after the huge dust storm last night.

Power poles were down, laying in the street.

Crews were in cherry pickers, untangling broken power pole tops from all the wires.

This man said he was the job boss.  He was inserting hundreds of tiny grommets into holes in the new metal poles they were putting up.  He said the poles come with dozens of holes and residents complain of the wind noise they create (but the bees love them).  He explained, last night's storm was just "a baby" with only 15-17 power poles down.  A serious storm might knock over 50 - 75 power poles!

We drove to Casa Grande, AZ and went through the National Monument - ruins of multistory dwellings a thousand years old.

We ate a picnic lunch at the park and this tiny ground squirrel ran around under our table and shared bits of carrot sticks with us.

The hot glaring mid day sun made an optical illusion by the park's restrooms.

Several hours away in Coolidge, AZ - she parked right at the highway entrance to a Wal*Mart.

Our last stop driving today was in the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation.  I noticed crosses up on a hill and we were able to find the dirt roads that wound up there.
